Hi guys... My wife has now decided that she is a more deserving(!!) 240 driver than me so wants to take over use of the car... but she does not like the "key only" boot lock (ie with no push button), see pic. Is there an EASY way to convert to a more practical push button type lock, or would I have to find a new bootlid with rectangular button/lock arrangement...? Any advice much appreciated. Kind regards, John.
To keep the car looking original, you could fit a remote boot release. Either use a cable or a solenoid. On my Scimitar, I used a bonnet cable & lever from a BMW, which worked well.

Hi John Keith from Dunedin with an answer to your boot lock problem. I have seen this done before using a small solenoid which is attached to the lock by a rod. Then you have a push button switch mounted under the dash somewhere handy. I had a solenoid in my garage somewhere I will have a hunt and see if I can find it.
I have a magnetic boot release sitting in my boot waiting to be fitted, I bought it from mark hoffman in australia (look on ebay to contact him - "volvoa1") It works as a cylinder that mounts next to the boot lock and then a piston is connected by a rod to the boot opening mechanism, when the button is pushed, the piston is pulled into the cylinder by magnets, making the boot release! Here are some pics of the mechanism (I also bought a boot latch along with the realease as mine was not compatible...) In the final photo, you can see that on the boot latch assembly, the rod from the piston goes through a little hole. My car did not have this hole on the original latch so I had to get another latch from mark when i ordered the boot realease. You will have to check you boot latch has one of these before you order but I would suspect it has one, seen as you're in NZ. The whole assembly fastens into the nearest access hole in the boot (if that makes sense?) Hope this helps, 'cause ive just uploaded those pics especially for you!! :) Steve...:D EDIT: By the way, it earths itself onto the boot and the black wire in the photos is extended around the car to the dash mounted switch and is then wired to a fuse.
Volvo have always offered an accessorie electric boot release for the 200 series , the switch fits in the glovebox . It may even be worth trying the dealer to search the network for one .
My 1981 is a Belgian built one and has a turn knob with key fitted. This style of boot lid was fitted from about 1979-85 so if yours is in that age range it should be possible to get one through the dealer. I can post a pic if required. Mike
