digi 002 fader question

Will the faders on digi 002 affect input gain like a "real" mixer or will they be like the Protools on-screen mixer and only affect playback levels?

The faders on the 002, like any other control surface, will control the onscreen faders in Protools. If you want input fader control, set up your console in PT with aux tracks, and bus them over to the audio tracks you want to record on.

If you want to affect input gain for the 002 for the 4 pre amps there are gain knobs on top of the mixer...
