Transmission does not shift up when cold.

MessageAuthor

The transmission an my '89 GLT B230 does not shift up until around 3000 RPM when cold. Once it is warmed up it is fine, shifting at 1500 RPM. The fluid level looks fine. There is some play in the kickdown cable however, well not play exactly, more of a reluctance to return to being taught once the throttle has been blipped. Could it be a cable problem or am I looking at a new transmission (gulp)? Julyan Bayes

Hi, Kick-down cables do wear out.. The outer protective skin and cable protection can wear and rust. Worth checking the integrity of the cable to be sure. Also worth checking the state of the oil in the gearbox, to make sure it is providing the protection it should be... Des. . . ;)

Try disconnecting the cable after it has returned properly and see what happens - it should change up at low revs but not kick down. The only other suggestion would be to try an oil and internal filter change. Mike

I'm glad I was prove right and it wasn't anything too serious. Certainly the oil change will be beneficial - something which many people overlook. Now go and enjoy! Mike
