Help with Distorting inputs

MessageAuthor

Hi, I wonder if someone could offer me a bit of advice... I plugged my Mbox in yesterday for its first outing. All of the playback was great, but when I came to test the recording and inputs I think I got something wrong. I created a mono audio track and plugged my electo-acoustic guitar into line 1 on the back. I set the track to record, selected "inst" as the input impedance and turned up the input gain on the knob on the front. I then adjusted the input/mix knob to see what the latency was like. My problem is that the "input" (ie the direct feed) was crystal clear, as you'd expect. The "mix" side of things (which was going through the AD/DA converters) was really thin and distorted. I tried turning down the gain on the guitar, but there was no difference. I tried changing the leads. I tried recording a bit with the track muted, but it didn't make any difference. What makes me thing that there's something amiss is the fact that the unconverted signal was exactly as I'd expect, but the recorded signal was horrible. I've double checked the manual, but I think I'm doing it right... can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong Jim

RE: Help with Distorting inputs

depend your micro in your electo-acoustic guitar...if you have some sort of piezo or passive one :chances are that you need a preamp to match impedance issue. i would suggest you to try to record your guitar from the headphone or line output in your guitar-ampli to see if the problem is still here. **********OskaR's uprightbass player *******************(O=)==* *******************EllllB *******************-(_O_)===#

RE: Help with Distorting inputs

Thanks for the swift reply - my first post and a reply within the hour I'll try putting it through my little mixing desk first then, although I've never had any issues with the sound from the guitar before. The gain pot seems to work for the zero-latency side of things as well and that signal's as clean as a whistle, it's only the processed signal that sounds naff... Thanks Jim

Ooops - forgot to say, it's an active preamp in the guitar, and I changed the battery too cause that sometimes causes a bit of fuzz... it wouldn't have anything to do with the firmware would it? Jim

Don't think it's about the firmware because when you install PT a check is made to see if you have the last one. Try to record other source ...with a mic and see if the issue is still there...i think that through your mixer should solve the problem. **********OskaR's uprightbass player *******************(O=)==* *******************EllllB *******************-(_O_)===#

RE: Help with Distorting inputs

I think it was the lack of XP Service Pack 1 that was causing the distortion. I've now upgraded to an AMD Athlon64 3000+ and the recommended Asus board and have had no problems at all. Hooray. Jim
